The friends

leave a comment »

Had a card from friends in London. Seems they’re in Greece enjoying an expensive, if pale by comparison, imitation of the wonderful weather we get here all year round for free… ha…!!

Seems Steve just bought a share in some Nigerian Bank scam or similar… as far as I could work out he’s expecting three million pineds to appear in the post any day… I think he’d have been much better off investing online and making a packet. Ah well… can’t tell some people.

I worry myself sometimes.

The light has been out in one of the upstairs toilets for the past week… and idle me has been trying to wait until the wife got fed up and did it for me. Sadly she didn;t take a single one of the innumerable hints I (and the kids) have dropped so I finally decided to just put a new bulb in.

Easy enough after all. So… I grabs me a bulb and a stepladder and of goes I.

I take off the glass globe thing, remove the bulb, plug in the new one… no worries. Then I screw the glass thingy over it… and drop a screw.

Well I screwed up the other ‘loose’ one until the glass thingy didn’t more, and hopped down of the ladder to pick up the dropped screw… when suddenly bang… I’m hit on the back of the head by something heavy which then falls to the floor with a crash.

Yup… it had fallen off and after braining me… smashed to a million pieces on the tile floor. Oh good.

Apart from the stupidity I displayed in not making 100% sure it *souldn’t* drop when I left it… I was amazed by the sheer amount of broken glass that was generated. I’m *sure( there was enough broken glass to make at least 3 of the damn things…

… took me ages to clear up.

Now I’ll have to blame the wife… after all it *was* her fault really… if she’d only done it for me all would still be fine… am I right or am I right?? 😀

The brother.

leave a comment »

Seems all the exercise my little brother has been doing over the past 40+ years has produced an enlarged heart. We hope that’s all it is and there’s no lasting damage. He’s due for a scan this week and we’re waiting to hear how it went.

Hopefully he’ll get through ok.

The sister.

My sister seems to have joined the international jet set as a ‘groupie grannie’. Since retiring she’s taken to zooming around the UK and Europe following el Divo and has just flown off to the USA see a Ricki Martin concert with tickets she won online! 🙂

We were a bit worried about her because of the recent major increase in security at UK airports but she managed to get thru it ok and is set for a few days fun in Miami with he husband!!

Nice for some eh?? 😀

So – the landscaper…

Well it was also interesting in its own way.

We arrived in court, and before the case was heard we had a short discussion with the paralegal who told us (again) all that was going to happen was that a date would be set for the hearing and that we’d probably win that as well because we had such a strong case.

In we go to the court… and we’re all taken by surprise by the magistrate telling us a professional mediator was available and we all had to go discuss the issues with him and reach a mutually agreed decision (!!!)

Off we go to the ‘mediation room’ where we had the opportunity to ‘discuss the issues’… hmmm… anyway Garry tells us how he considers we owe him money… and I give him several serves about the appalling standard of his workmanship and lack of professionalism etc etc…

… and then we break for us to have a discussion with the paralegal who *then* decides to tell us we ought o settle because the magistrate will do it for us and just award him difference between what we say we owe him, and what he says we owe him.

We are now stuck between a rock and a hard place so in the end we go back and after some discussion we ‘agree’ at a sum of $7,250. This is a lot more than we think we owed him… **but** is actually *$750* less than we offered him two court appearences ago.

The upshot is that though we ended up paying him…

(a) we achieved our main purpose in first causing him as much stress and aggravation as we possibly could before being forced to pay because of his behaviour over the entire course of the work he was supposed to have done.
(b) he has now gone away with a sour feeling because his greed resulted in him actually getting a lower figure than he would have got had he accepted our offer made a few months ago.

All in all it could have been worse… though of course we still have to pay the solicitors so will probably end up ‘even’ with the figure he originally sued us for… but since *he* didn;t get it we’re quite satisfied 🙂

Strangely enough it seems that whilst we can;t sue him directly for any of the work he’s done badly, we *can* approach his insurance company and tell *them* they have to have the work repaired… this is an approach we are yet to think over. Pretty much we’re over it now and might just get on with it ourselves.

Hail, hail springs almost here.

leave a comment »

The first hailstorm of the season arrived yesterday for some parts of Sydney. Luckily for us we only caught the edges of it and the storm gathered force as it moved towards the City. No damage luckily, just weird scenes (for Sydney) of hail ankle deep on the Anzac Bridge looking for all the world a if there’d been a snowstorm! Weird 🙂

November is the time we usually expect wild weather and hail, so this early visitation was quite welcome in its own way… and the rain was an added bonus for the parched gardens!
