Vale Billy Thorpe

leave a comment »

Some of you may ask “Billy Who?” but he isn;t an unknown. Billy was the singer who created one of the best little rock songs ever “Some people I know (think that I’m crazy)” sung by Australians and others around the world for the past 30 years.

He died of a massive heart attack at home earlier today with his family around him. He’d been suffering chest pains and paramedics tried, but failed, to save him.

Sad loss but his music will be remembered if only for that one song.

The eldest daughter (the one in the UK of course) has just had another baby… a little girl… first grand-daughter in fact!! No idea what the name is yet, the daughter *did* tell me the name she was going to give it but that was months ago and you know what my mind is like.

She was born on Saturday 24th at 7:02 a.m. after a bit of an emergency arrival.

Not heard from the daughter direct yet so no idea how either of them are currently but we’ll call later to find out.

So far she’s had three kids… two boys and now a girl. πŸ™‚

Legal representation not a right?

with one comment

It would appear from statements tendered to the Federal Court yesterday that citizens of Australia who are in danger abroad have no basis in law to call on their government for aid and assistance. The fact this seems to fly in the face of what has always been seen as fundamental to the entire system of government responsibilityΓ‚ makes no difference. It is simply *not* enshrined in law… tho of course there might be reason to claim ‘custom and practice’ have made it so.

The case is – again – related to David Hicks ongoing incarceration and torture by the USA and the perceived compliance of the Australian government in his treatment.

Counter arguments suggest that the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Attorney-General were complicit in the commission of a *war crime* by allowing David to have been held, to be paraded before a kangaroo court created specifically to find him guilty of anythingΓ‚ and whatever the subsequent sentence is determined to be.

Whilst the incumbent party is in power there is not likely to be any issue made, but if Labor should take over at the next election they might well find himself under investigation with possible charged laid!!

It’s not escaped attention that while it is illegal in the USA for a citizen to be hauled before the Military Court… it is ok for an Au,stralian to face it!! This is to say the least inequitable treatment and again raises the issue of kangaroo courts.

We’re watching proceedings closely, but the possibility we are *not* able to claim by right, legal support is a worrying one. I wonder what the legal situation is back in the UK?l

The morning stroll

leave a comment »

Getting quite used to this now. Wife gets on bus and I stagger off into the darkness with the two dogs. The kids used to come but they seem to be less inclined to make the effort now preferring to stay curled up under the doona… nice for some!

I was in bed at 8:00 p.m. because I was feeling so bad but still managed to get up and out this morning at 6:00 a.m. and that is *not* like me!

Oddly though, I found it a lot easier this morning… maybe it was because I’m getting used to the stretch… or of course maybe because I was still half asleep when I was doing it. Either way I gotaround and home a lot faster than I expected… I even considered going round twice but had to get back to get the kids up for school.

Makes you wonder why the weight loss has slowed down again… otoh… I’ve not been getting stuck into the soup the way I’m supposed to which might be one reason. Never mind… it’s still going down and that’s the right direction πŸ™‚

These boots were made for walking.

leave a comment »

Can’t find a decent pair of walking boots that’s a reasonable price so make do with buying trainers andwearing them until they fall apart at the seams… which isn’t long usually. The latest pair to be ruined are labelled by Mizumo ‘Wave Creation’ so are probably some generic brand… either way whilst I’ve never heard of them before they *are* pretty comfortable… so long as I wear special insoles. πŸ™‚

I’m not convinced it makes a huge amount of difference whether the trainers are made by major brands like Nike. I figure most of the pleasure comes from having paid $300 for a pair… which I’m *not* paying. I’ll drag myself towards the $150 mark if I’m forced but I’d need a lot of forcing.

Come to that… I’m not really in the market for the garish colour schemes that seem prevalent amongst manufacturers these days. What on earth is wrong with plain white? Why do I need fluorescent rainbow coloured footwear anyway? Beats me.

I *do* need decent trainers now tho. I only walk 3 – kilometers or so in the mornings but it helps if I don’t then spend all day limping because of pains in my feet. Besides… overall during the day I suppose I get to 10 kilometres or so and is justification in itself for decent walkers.
I think it’s back to the shops for me!

Yet another dog day…

with 5 comments

The littlies went to a Girl Guides church service today… it’s ‘Thinking Day’ today and the anniversary of the beginning of Scouting/Guiding so there was a parade… I think πŸ˜€

Anyway, we drove up Windsor Road on the way and as we drove I saw a small dog on the left resolutely walking along the side of the road, head down and looking a little ‘sad’. Like most people, I’d normally have passed by assuming it was on its way home, but this time something made me slow down to look at it for a while. I put the hazard lights on… and watched.

Eventually I decided that because it sisn;t have a collar and wasn’t doing the usual doggy things lilke sniffing bushes etc it must either be lost… or have been dumped.

In the end we decided to take the easy path and pick it up… just in case. The eldest daughter got out and after a minute or so, picked it up, put it in the car, and off we went to the church.

We had a closer look when we came out. It’s female amd didn’t look undernourished… though maybe was a bit thin. It didn’t have a collar and wasn’t obviously a young dog… twas a bit grey round the gills in fact. It has a limp… though whether that’s because of the walking or arthritis or… well who knows.

So it came home with us and after eating half a bowl of chicken meat it collapsed onto a cushion and has spent the entire day sleeping apart from two minutes when it went out, to have a drink.

Of course the other two dogs took it less well than thy might. Actually Kit was ok… but Stupid decided this was a treat… a new girlfriend who was of course unable to resist his’ charms’. She of course snapped at him a few times and the idiot has spent most of the evening locked out πŸ˜€

I’ll be making an appointment to see the vet tomorrow to see if it had been given a microhip… if it has it’ll get home… if not? Not sure what to do. We’re only allowed two dogs and the idiot’s behaviour seems to make me think keeping another isn’t such a good idea.

I’ll update the story tomorrow if I get to the vet.

Golden oldies

Readers will… or might… recall that last year my folks tried to extend their stay for three months but my other got ‘knocked back’ by DIMAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship). The old man got through… but the old lady *didn’t*… so they left a little earlier than they’d have liked.
This year the strangest thing happened. Despite my mothers clear deterioration physically and mentally in the past year… this time *she* got through on the nod and they rang my old man to check *he* was ok!!

Still… even odder was that they *both* got permission to stay for the next three months! So… looks like we’re in for another interesting few months πŸ˜€

Lord that site also takes a load of time! The bandwidth took a beating last month so I upped it… and then got an ‘Exceeded bandwidth limit” again yesterday.

So I checked… and realised with some ebarrassment that I’d been reading the account specs wrongl;y… I have *75* Gigabytes of bandwidth to play with… so raised the limit to 10 Gig and I hope all will be well for the next few months πŸ™‚

Also for the first time I had to ban a member. He was really disruprive and had already left once (voluntarily) and rejoined… but now gone for good… well until he forces a reassignment of his IP I suppose. It’s a pain there is nothing permanent on the web πŸ™‚

Still… there’s still loads to do… best get on with it.

Dog days.

leave a comment »

We have two dogs… an insane black Labrador called Snoopy (a.k.a. Stupid), and an old Australian Blue Heeler (Cattle dog) called Kit. Snoopy is only a few years old… 4 I think… can’t be sure as he was huge when we got him. Kit on the other hand is nearly 12 years old… or in ‘dog years’… around 84 years old. We’ve had her since she was a few weeks old.

Because she’s been with us so long she’s got used to getting her own way. Yes she’ll come if she’s called… but only if she wants to. And if she doesn’t want to come… well she just doesn’t! πŸ™‚

This morning as is becoming usual I staggered down to the bus stop with the wife to see her of to work. The kids have long since stopped coming along, preferring to lie in bed of a morning quietly festering away. However… the dogs have little choice so come along too.

Snoopy is all for walking… he never gets enough… Kit on the other hand has become less inclined towards exercise as the years have drifted by, preferring to lie around in bed like the kids. Still… with some persuasion, she comes.

This morning … as usual… the wife said ‘bye’ got on the bus and disappeared around the corner. I said “ok dogs let’s go”.. and set off down the path towards the area we know as ‘the dog park’… but when I looked around… Kit was ambling resolutely off towards the house ignoring me totally. Oi Kit… shouts I… and she stops and looks at me… “Let’s go!” I say…. and she turns… and continues to walk back towards the house πŸ™‚

“Oi madam”… I call… “Walk time… this way please!!” Kit gaves me what I can only call an ‘old fashioned look’ and finally made up her mind to come along too… though on her terms… wandering off into the bushes and lagging behind just to show she wasn’t that keen on it πŸ™‚

Kit by the way is always off the lead… she is pretty safe to be left to her own devices. On the other hand, she *does* have this thing about bicycles… maybe she thinks they are are skinny cows… who knows.

Anyway,Γ‚ Snoopy on the other hand has a halter around his face and the lead is connected under his chin so that if he bolts… as he is wont to do, he’ll cause himself some pain when the lead tightens and pulls his head around sharply. This may sound cruel, but in the past… when the lead was attached to his collar, he’s been able to take the strain against his chest… and the leads have just broken! He’s a big dog.

The walk first thing in the morning is quite nice in parts… as long as it’s dry. There are *very* few other people around and no other dogs. On the way we walk past a bush regeneration area and have counted up to ten rabbits sitting up as we approach then bouncing off into the scrub. In the old days, Kit would have chased them… now she pays them no attention whatever.

I continue around to the dog park and walk it two and a half times. Each circuit is 350 paces more or less and my stride is around 85 cms which means I walk… err… ok you do the math. In total the walk morning around the estate is about 3,500 paces… which I think is roughly two and a half kilometres… and takes around 30 mins o so.

It’s a good start to the day… especially with a couple of friends to keep me company. Having said that… I can understand Kit’s point of view… on a cold morning it *would* be nice to stay in bed that little bit longer πŸ˜€
